Rose of Sharon Orphanage Mission/Construction Trip
Join Me January 24 - 31 in the Dominican Republic.
Hello Friends,
I’d love for you to join me this year as I return to the Rose of Sharon Orphanage in the Dominican Republic. Over the past five of six winters I have traveled with friends, co-workers, sub-contractors and clients to spend at least a week on a working vacation. Together we have built maintenance buildings, sidewalks, a wall for security around the entire two-acre compound and a school for the boys. More important than the actual building projects are the many hours we spend playing games and constructing relationships with the boys. Each year I return home receiving far more than what I give.
I’d love to share this experience with you. Most people when first asked are concerned that they don’t have the right experience for this type of trip.
Here are a few ways to figure out if you are able to do the most important work on the trip.
- Do you have a lap for the boys to sit on?
- Can you give a hug and more importantly can you receive a hug from a kid that just rolled around in the dirt?
- Can you share your Creator’s love with children?
If you meet the conditions above so you are completely qualified for the most important work at the orphanage.
If you are not as much of a kid person (like me) then you can gear your week towards building projects. Here are the qualifications that you need.
- Be willing to follow orders from me
- Clean floors and walls.
- Organize storage areas. Sort through donated clothing and match it with the boys.
- Paint several miles of walls.
- Carry concrete block, buckets, and push a wheel barrow in 88 degree temps in January.
If you work in the building trades in the US you are automatically promoted to foreman status on our work crews.
In addition to working at the orphanage Monday through Friday we will visit in the homes of friends that we have made over the years of visiting the orphanage.
Logistics
We fly into the capital city of Santo Domingo, on a Sunday and take a 3.5 hour bus ride to our hotel in San Juan de la Maguana. Each morning we drive 6 miles to the orphanage and then back to our air conditioned hotel in the evening. We enjoy mostly warm showers and then we go out to eat together in the evening as a team.
If you are interested in joining me this year please contact me as soon as possible at 610 380-9570. We will finalize our plane reservations at the end of November for the January trip.
